About me: My harshest critics complain that I am a fabulous, magic teacher and a charismatic person – but that I have sexual relationships with students... I'm pleased to admit that it is mostly true, but you'll have to make an appointment; I'm not seeing any walk-ins these days. Some also insist that an episode of Sex and the City (season 1 episode 6) was based on my life as a Hasidic artist in the village, (I painted portraits from my studio down on Bleecker St.) who paints nudes and has an affair with the buyer for a prestigious gallery. This also is true.
"The Torn Messiah", a novel by Melbourne writer Yvonne Fein,(which you can Google for details) is recognised as a 'roman a clef' about my time in Melbourne. Ostensibly a fictional narrative about a predatory rabbi, it is pretty much based on me, she claims. Yvonne is one of two Australian women who claim, definitively, To Not Have Had Sex with me. Alas, many of her claims, including that one, skirt the truth widely. Still, it's very flattering to have novels written about one, isn't it? I'm hoping my Melbourne students will be equally flattered recognizing themselves in my novel, The Inner Shikseh, about a Hasidic rabbi who meets and ministers to the needs of kinky Jews, sabbath-observant queers, sadists and masochists, bondage freaks, masters and slaves, pain-givers and pain-cravers, humiliation artists and a plethora of other taboo-breakers. The story also charts the rise and eventual triumph of Rabbi Schreiber's nemesis, an articulate and delusional woman, who, believing herself a survivor of an obscure rabbinical sex-cult devotes her life to a campaign against anything rabbinical.
Two years ago I was still devastated by the fresh notoriety, watching my life and work (and friends) being processed in the Cuisinart of Sexual Correctitude. These days I'm seeing many blessings come almost as recompense for the shaming and humiliation. I'm surrounded by people who found me on the Internet, still, no worries.
